Workshops
Three workshops will be held on 21 November in Melbourne. This is the day before the ASID conference. They are open to everyone whether you are coming to the conference or not. You need to register for these separately from the conference.
Workshop 1:
Building supportive relationships between staff and people with intellectual disabilities
When: Tuesday 21 November, 10 – 4 pm

The relationship between staff and the supported person with intellectual disability is at the heart of service provision for people with intellectual disabilities in community settings. The aim of this workshop is to explore this fundamental relationship and the impact of the micro, meso and macro level contexts
The workshop will draw on empirical material from a research project. This project involved direct care staff and front-line managers who support people with intellectual disabilities in group homes and day program or community access services. Based on this material, including interviews and surveys, we will talk about:
- the concepts of restrictive measures and restrictive practices,
- self-determination, protection and restrictions,
- and identify organisational, managerial and staff factors that impact how support is provided.
The discussions will include
- research on and experience with Active Support, Positive Behaviour Support, trauma-informed care and capable environments.
- Theoretical perspectives will be informed by care ethics and trauma informed services.
The comparison between Swedish and Australian legislation, practices and experiences, will allow participants to reveal that which is rendered invisible by being “taken for granted”.
Workshop 2:
Maximising health and health care for adults with intellectual disability who live in supported accommodation.

Target audience: Managers of disability support services

The workshop will identify strategies to improve the health and healthcare of people with intellectual disability. It will draw upon an understanding of how the general practitioners and specialist practitioners operate within the(ir) healthcare systems. Practical evidence-based strategies and tips on how to try to bridge the gap between disability support and health systems will be discussed. In addition, The Roadmap for improving the health of people with intellectual disability and recent changes to the delivery of primary health care will be highlighted. Attendees will also contribute to small group discussions to generate solutions to the barriers to good health and healthcare for people with intellectual disability.
Workshop 3:
Frontline Practice Leadership: how to make it happen

Target audience: Managers of disability support services

We will describe Frontline Practice Leadership. We will talk about
- how it relates to Active Support and Quality of Life,
- how to perform the five tasks of Practice Leadership.
We will use videos, discussion and reflection. You will learn the key skills of Practice Leadership and how to apply them in your services.
